鈥淒r. Charney鈥檚 fascinating research provides important new insights into the problematic realm of art theft, which impacts society at large in surprisingly direct ways,鈥 said Dr. Jill Deupi. 鈥淏eyond the loss of priceless treasures and the shared cultural memories these works embody and preserve, such crimes are often part of a much larger, more menacing web of criminal activity, including the illegal trafficking of drugs and firearms. These are not, therefore, the 鈥榲ictimless鈥 crimes that they are commonly said to be. Dr. Charney鈥檚 research, like the on-going work of ARCA and his many, finely-crafted written works, casts this situation in a new and clarifying light.鈥

Dr. Charney is the author of numerous academic and popular articles, including a regular column in ArtInfo called 鈥淭he Secret History of Art鈥 and a weekly interview series in The Daily Beast called 鈥淗ow I Write.鈥澛 His first novel, 鈥淭he Art Thief鈥 (Atria 2007), is currently translated into seventeen languages and is a best-seller in five countries. The Financial Times called it 鈥渁n engaging whodunit.鈥 USA Today said: 鈥淔ascinating details about Caravaggio and Vermeer, the lucrative business of art forgery and the sophisticated thieves who steal priceless paintings.鈥 And the Rocky Mountain News opined: 鈥淒escriptively brilliant and filled with witticisms, this fine romp features a clever and well-drawn cast of characters, as well as educates readers about real masterpieces and the artists behind them.鈥

Noah Charney is the editor of an academic essay collection entitled 鈥淎rt & Crime: Exploring the Dark Side of the Art World鈥 (Praeger 2009) and the 鈥淢useum Time鈥 series of guides to museums in Spain (Planeta 2010). His is the author of a critically-acclaimed work of non-fiction, 鈥淪tealing the Mystic Lamb: the True History of the World鈥檚 Most Coveted Masterpiece鈥(PublicAffairs 2011), is a best-seller in two countries that tells the story of the most frequently stolen artwork of all time, 鈥淭he Ghent Altarpiece鈥 by Jan van Eyck. The Sunday Times UK calls it 鈥渁n intriguing blend of reportage and art history, providing what is in effect a remarkable 鈥渂iography鈥 of this beautiful and tough survivor [The Ghent Altarpiece]. And the Christian Science Monitor explains: 鈥淚n scrupulous detail, Charney divulges the secrets of the revered painting鈥檚 past, and in doing so, gives readers a history lesson on art crime, a still-prospering black market. His latest book is 鈥淭he Thefts of the Mona Lisa: On Stealing the World鈥檚 Most Famous Painting鈥(ARCA Publications 2011). Upcoming books include 鈥淭he Book of Forgery鈥 (Phaidon 2014) and 鈥淭he Invention of Art鈥 (Norton 2015).

鈥淣oah Charney is the Sherlock Holmes of art theft,鈥 said Mark Lamster, author of 鈥淢aster of Shadows.鈥濃淏eyond his great sleuthing prowess, he writes with the simple grace of a novelist and the erudition of a scholar.鈥 Guillermo Solana, Director of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, notes 鈥淣oah Charney is an important bridge between museums and the general public.鈥
