Ranked Stags Trump UMBC, Face Yale on Saturday
The #13 天美传媒视频无限制观看 men's lacrosse team scored eight times in the first-half on its way to a 14-9 win over visiting UMBC on Alumni Field Saturday afternoon. The Stags, who snap a two-game losing streak, are 3-2, while the Retrievers fall to 1-3.
The Stags scored three goals in a span of 5:40 in the first eight minutes of the game. Colin McLinden put home a Jordan Greenfield pass at the 12:46 mark to get the scoring going. Greenfield then found the back of the net unassisted at the 8:08 mark for a 2-0 lead and Bryan Barry netted a Tristan Sperry pass 62 seconds later for a 3-0 advantage. The Retrievers answered with a three-goal run of their own, this coming in a 2:30 stretch. David Campbell scored at the 5:57 mark to get UMBC on the board and then 45 seconds later fed Zach Linkous to make the score 3-2. Ty Kashur tied the score with an unassisted tally at the 3:27 mark of the quarter.
The period nearly came to a close with the score tied, but Sperry found the back of the net with four ticks left to give Fairfield a 4-3 edge. Fairfield would score four times in the second quarter, while holding UMBC scoreless in the period. Greenfield scored at the 9:13 mark and after the Stags won the ensuing face-off Marshall Johnson struck 13 ticks later to make the Stags advantage 6-3. Sam Snow put home a Greenfield pass at the 4:35 mark to give the Stags a 7-3 lead and TJ Neubauer rounded out the first-half scoring with a goal with 3:14 to play before the break to give the Stags an 8-3 lead.
Greenfield started the scoring in the second-half with an unassisted goal 90 seconds into the period, that completed the Stags 6-0 run and gave Fairfield a 9-3 edge. Linkous scored a man-up goal for the Retrievers at the 7:48 mark to close the deficit to 9-4 and give UMBC is first goal in nearly 27 minutes of action. Conor Finch struck for an unassisted goal for UMBC at the 5:13 mark to make the score 9-4, but again Fairfield put together an offensive run.
Sperry started the stretch of scoring for Fairfield with his second goal with 3:49 to play in the third quarter. Snow put home a pass from Johnson at the 2:37 mark of the quarter and Greenfield wrapped up the periods scoring with 94 seconds left to make the score 12-5. Linkous snapped the Fairfield run with a goal 49 seconds into the final period, but he was answered by McLinden (13:05) and Snow (11:30) as Fairfield pushed the lead to 14-6. Finch scored twice (10:48 & 2:35) around a Nate Lewnes goal (8:31) for the final margin.
Jack Murphy earned the win in net for the Stags with a career-best 17 saves in net, with 10 stops coming in the second-half. Adam Cohen took the loss for UMBC allowing 14 goals against eight saves.
Greenfield finished as the leading scorer in the game with a career-best six points as he netted four goals and handed out two assists. McLinden finished with two goals and two assists, while Snow recorded a hat trick. Sperry had two goals and Johnson finished with two points.
UMBC was led by the four points of Conor Finch, who scored three times, as did Linkous. Campbell had a goal and an assist as well for the Retrievers.
Barry picked up a game-high equaling, and career-best, eight ground balls for the Stags, who had a 36-32 edge in the category. Michael Roe had three ground balls as he went 8-18 at the face-off X. Phil Poe was 16-27 at the X with eight ground balls for UMBC.
Fairfield returns to action on March 9 when it travels to Yale for a 1 p.m. contest.
