Photojournalist Discusses "The Camera at War"

So often, our opinion about an issue is shaped by the image captured by an intrepid photographer who has gone where the action is. One of them, French-born photojournalist Jonathan Alpeyrie, will present his work on Thursday, January 31, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and again from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. in the Library Multimedia Room. All are welcome to attend.

Alpeyrie鈥檚 career spans a decade plus, during which time he has traveled to 25 countries, including nine conflict zones. The results are powerful images of war, migration, religion, industry, and world leaders.聽 One of his recent projects brought him to Syria, where he documented the unfolding civil war; CNN highlighted his story, last March.

鈥淎t Fairfield, we want our students to receive an inspired education, and it鈥檚 our hope that bringing Jonathan Alpeyrie to campus will work toward that goal,鈥 said Dr. Suzanna Klaf, associate director for the Center of Academic Excellence, who has sponsored Alpeyrie鈥檚 visit along with Dr. Lei Xie, assistant professor of English. 鈥淗e brings an authentic perspective from the field and from his years of embedding himself in the communities within which he works.鈥

Alpeyrie has worked as a freelancer for various publications and websites such as Le Figaro magazine, American Photo , Africa International , The Traveler UK , and various New York and Los Angeles newspapers. For the last four years, he has been on the staff of Polaris Images. His current project is a book of photographs about the veterans of World War ll, which is slated for publication in 2014.聽 To view his website, .

This talk was made possible by the Humanities Institute, the Office of Academic Affairs, the English Department, the International Studies program, and the Center for Faith & Public Life.
