42 Bellarmine Rd. Re-named Faber Hall to Honor Newest Jesuit Saint

42 Bellarmine Road, the residence hall named temporarily for the year in which 天美传媒视频无限制观看 was founded 鈥 1942 鈥 and the road on which it sits, is getting a new name.

Located on the south side of campus, the building originally served as the primary residence for the Fairfield Jesuit Community. After a new Jesuit residence was built in 2009, the hall was extensively renovated and converted to student housing.聽 It has also been the home to the Creative Life Residential College for sophomores.

At 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 22 , residents of 42 Bellarmine Road will join others from the University community to re-name and dedicate the hall in honor of St. Peter Faber, S.J., the newest Jesuit saint. The ceremony will take place at the main entrance of the hall.

St. Peter Faber, S.J. (1506-1546) was among the companions of St. Ignatius who would come together to form the Society of Jesus. Faber was esteemed for his 鈥渃harming grace" in dealing with people. Under the direction of St. Ignatius, he spent his life preaching the gospel, promoting the Church, and offering the Spiritual Exercises. In 1544, he was sent to Portugal to establish the Society of Jesus in that country.

Pope Francis canonized Peter Faber on December 17, 2013. The Pope praised Faber for his openness to 鈥渄ialogue with all, even the most remote and even with his opponents; his simple piety, a certain na茂vet茅 perhaps, his being available straightaway, his careful interior discernment,鈥 and the fact that he was a man capable of great and strong decision but also capable of being so gentle and loving.鈥

Dr. Nancy Dallavalle, associate professor of religious studies and University Facilitator for Mission and Identity, and a member of the building dedication committee, said 鈥渋n naming residence halls after Jesuits we believe these forerunners to be not merely 鈥榠nspirational鈥 for the living, but actively 鈥渇or us鈥 in the communion of saints. This building is being dedicated to a saint, who modeled a holiness of life found to be exemplary.鈥
