The College Mission During Turbulent Times

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

3:30-4:30 p.m.; Oak Room, Barone Campus Center

Guest Speaker: Dr. Andrew Delbanco

Author of College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be
Director of American Studies, Columbia University

In his book, prominent cultural critic Dr. Andrew Delbanco offers a defense of a four-year college experience that is an exploratory time for students to discover passions and test ideas and values with the help of teachers and peers. He believes this concept is often at odds with the narrow view of obtaining a bachelor鈥檚 degree as a pre-professional credential. Dr. Delbanco will share his insights on how colleges should remain true to their mission in these turbulent economic times and make college available to as many young people as possible.

Dr. Delbanco received his BA and PhD from Harvard and is the director of American Studies at Columbia University, where has been Columbia鈥檚 Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities since 1995. He has authored six books and countless essays in the New York Review of Books, The New Republic and other journals on topics from American literacy and religious history to contemporary issues in higher education. In February 2012, President Barack Obama presented Dr. Delbanco with the National Humanities Medal for 鈥渉is writings on higher education and the place classic authors hold in history and contemporary life.鈥 聽In 2001, he was named by Time Magazine as "America's Best Social Critic" and in 2003 named New York State Scholar of the Year. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among others.
