Service for Justice (S4J) Residential College Actively Involved in the Community
The Service for Justice (S4J) , located on the "Quad" in 70 McCormick Road, is a community of sophomore students focused on exploring questions of service, diversity, and social justice.
Residents of S4J are very active this year, with four student committees: Service, Social, Residential Community Council (RCC), and Wellness Wednesday.
The service committee offers service opportunities to students every other week. 天美传媒视频无限制观看 20 residents meet each week and work to set up service. During the first part of each meeting they reflect on the service completed that week and how it relates to the work they do in the Residential College.
Lately, every other week, students go to Operation Hope, a shelter in downtown Fairfield that serves meals to homeless families in the area. Students cook and serve meals to families while interacting with them. Residents are also planning to participate in the School Volunteer Association (SVA) Read Aloud Day, visiting elementary schools in Bridgeport and reading to students.
The students are very passionate about the biggest service project undertaken this year--raising money for Habitat for Humanity, a national organization that helps rebuild homes for families. The S4J project is focusing on building homes in Bridgeport. To succeed, students need to raise about $50-100 each for supplies. They have set up a so supporters can donate funds, and are also setting up other fundraising opportunities on campus.
After enough money is raised to work with Habitat, the students are looking to move their fundraising efforts to Sunrise Day Camp, which is camp for children who have cancer.
Planning is also in the works for an alternative spring break trip for the residents of S4J with the St. Bernard Project to help families in Sea Bright, N.J., where there are still hundreds of families displaced from Hurricane Sandy.
