The Met: Live in HD - Madama Butterfly, Sunday

The spring weather is setting in and The Met: Live in HD season at the Quick is soon coming to a close! Madama Butterfly, Roberto Devereux and Elektra are final screenings that make for great weekend plans. Reserve your tickets and gather your friends and family for these Met: Live in HD performances.

Don’t miss this Sunday’s special screening of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Enjoy the story of a young Japanese geisha who is stubborn in thinking her arranged marriage to a visiting American naval officer is a genuine and permanent union. Kristine Opolais delivers a captivating performance as the title role in Anthony Minghella’s 2006 production for the first time. Roberto Alagna plays opposite of Opolais in the role of the naval officer, Pinkerton, who shatters her heart. Madama Butterfly is a true classic and factors in themes of cultural and sexual imperialism, while having a lyrical feel.

Join for the pre-talk with Jeffrey Johnson, a professor of music at the University of Bridgeport and a frequent lecturer, at 12:15 p.m. at the Quick Center. Tickets to the performance are $25, $20 for seniors and $5 for children and students. Visit the Quick Center to purchase tickets or call the box office at 203-254-4010 or toll free at 1-877-ARTS-396.

The Met: Live in HD season rounds out with two remaining screenings:

Gaetano Donizetti’s opera production of Roberto Devereux
Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The final opera in Donizetti’s impressive “Tudor trilogy” centers on an older Queen Elizabeth I, played by Sondra Radvanovsky, who must come to terms with signing the death warrant of a nobleman she loves. The New York Times applauds Radvanovsky, claiming she delivers an “emotionally vulnerable and a vocally daring performance.” Reserve your today.

Richard Strauss’s final opera production of Elektra
Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
This intense tragedy features Nina Stemme as Elektra, a bloodthirsty and compulsive woman seeking vengeance over the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Don’t miss Elektra for a chance to experience ancient Greek mythology with a twist on modern and expressionist views. Reserve your today.
