Stags Basketball Gears Up for MAAC Championship
With the regular season winding down for the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ men’s and women’s basketball teams, the playoff picture has begun to take shape. The Stags each have one more regular season game this weekend prior to the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The action begins on March 3, but both Fairfield teams will not take the court until Saturday, March 5.
Fairfield men’s basketball, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Sydney Johnson, is 18-11 overall and 12-7 entering their final regular season outing (Saturday at Saint Peter’s, 2 p.m.). The Stags are locked into a top-five spot in the MAAC standings, cementing a spot in one of the two Saturday, March 5 quarterfinals.
Should the Stags earn the tournament’s No. 3 seed, they will open their MAAC Championship slate on Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. Fairfield could also land as the No. 4 or No. 5 seed; those two teams square off on Saturday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m. and both contests are set to broadcast live on ESPN3.
Head Coach Joe Frager has guided the Fairfield women’s basketball team to a 16-12 record, including an 11-8 tally in the MAAC, heading into Friday’s regular-season finale at Quinnipiac (5 p.m.). The Stags are locked into the No. 4 seed vs. No. 5 seed game set for Saturday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m.
Pending this weekend’s results, the Stags’ opponent in their MAAC Championship Quarterfinal contest could be Monmouth, Manhattan on Siena.
