Immerse Yourself in the Arts

Welcome back, Stags! The semester has begun and the Quick Center for the Arts and Walsh Art Gallery have some exciting events ahead. Here is a sample of what’s ahead:

Opera: The Met: Live in HD - Turandot (Puccini)

Looking for plans this Saturday and interested in opera? If so, don't miss Nina Stemme’s remarkable performance of Puccini’s Turandot at the Quick Center, Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 6 p.m. (the 1 p.m. show is sold out). Stemme holds the demanding title role of Puccini’s Chinese ice princess who turns away all of her potential suitors. Anita Hartig and Leah Crocetto are quite the opposite in their shared role as the sweet slave girl known as Liu. Marco Berti as Calàf is the courageous suitor who sings “Nessun dorma” to win over the princess’ love. This Franco Zeffirelli production, first viewed in 1987, is conducted by Paolo Carignani.

Tickets to the performance are $25, $20 for seniors and $5 for children and students. Visit the Quick Center website to reserve your tickets or call the box off at (203) 254-4010. You are also invited to a 12:15 p.m. pre-broadcast talk by musicologist Dr. Jeffrey Johnson.

“Don Gummer, The Armature of Emotion: Drawings and Sculpture”

If you have an appreciation for art, visit the new exhibition, “Don Gummer, The Armature of Emotion: Drawings and Sculpture,” on display in the Walsh Art Gallery at the Quick Center from March 3 through June 11, 2016. An opening reception, free and open to the public, will take place in the Quick Center on Thursday, March 3 from 6-7:30 p.m.

The exhibit presents more than 50 drawings, watercolors, cardboard and bronze models, wall reliefs, and free-standing bronze and steel sculptures by the artist. Gummer’s richly layered, cerebrally composed drawings, incorporate color, encaustic (an ancient technique in which pigment is suspended in wax) and collage. In scale, they range from quick, small sketches, to elaborate monumental panels that are tapestry-like in their grandeur and proportions. Although all of Gummer’s drawings typically have the character of finished, autonomous creations regardless of size, many are in fact stages of a genesis: they are preliminary ideas and studies for sculptures, which show him working out, evolving, and testing different vantage points or compositions. Visit the Walsh Art Gallery for exhibit hours.

Children’s Summer Camps at the Quick Center

Missoula Children’s Theatre

The Quick Center is pleased to offer the community exciting children’s summer camp opportunities this season: Missoula Children’s Theatre and Summer Camp Intensives.

The Quick Center will hold its 27 th season of Missoula Children’s Theatre Camps this summer. This notable program includes six sessions with performances on Friday evenings concluding each session. An extended day program is also available. 60 children from the community, grades 1-12, can sign up for each weekly session. A multitude of roles are provided, and no experience is needed. Consider signing up if your children have a passion for acting or are looking for a fun, creative way to spend their summer days. The sessions run from July 11 through August 19 and include shows such as The Jungle Book and Alice in Wonderland. For more information and to register visit the Quick Center .

Summer Camp Intensives

Another intriguing experience to consider being part of is the Summer Camp Intensives. Each program takes place over four afternoons and exposes campers to activities in costume design, urban dance, street art, and musical theatre. Campers are encouraged to expand their skillset, while also learning about and expressing themselves during the process. Camps take place from July 11through August 11.
