Don Gummer's Art Opens at the Walsh Gallery

天美传媒视频无限制观看’s Walsh Art Gallery held an opening reception for its newest exhibit, “Don Gummer, The Armature of Emotion: Drawings and Sculpture,” on Thursday, March 3 , and clearly displayed Gummer’s own concept of how his work progresses.

“Sculpture is about gravity,” Gummer said at the event, “so my sculptures are literally built from the ground up.” That concept played out physically in the space as more than 50 of Gummer’s drawings, watercolors, cardboard and bronze models, wall reliefs and free-standing bronze and steel sculptures surrounded viewers both in the Walsh Gallery and in the main entrance of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Building has always been an impulse for the artist, who was once a carpenter and construction worker, and this exhibition is the first time that his works with house-like motifs, architecture-inspired drawings and monumental wall reliefs have been systematically exhibited together.

The reception, which was free and open to the public, was attended by students, faculty, staff, community members and family of the artist. The students in attendance were drawn to the abstraction of Gummer’s work, it’s thought-provoking use of space and use of varied materials (such as stone, sand and glass, as in Untitled Doha Maquetta ).

The exhibition was organized by Linda Wolk-Simon, Director and Chief Curator of the Museums of 天美传媒视频无限制观看, and runs until Saturday, June 11, 2016 .

Two public programs are offered in conjunction with the exhibition. “Drawing and Sculpture: A Conversation with Artist Don Gummer and Curator Luke Syson” will take place on March 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the Wein Experimental Theatre of the Quick Center for the Arts. (Luke Syson is Chairman of the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.)

“Did Donatello Draw? Designing Sculptures of the Renaissance,” a lecture by Dr. Michael Cole, Professor and Chair of the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University will take place April 20th at 6:00 p.m. In Bellarmine Hall. All events are free and open to the public. Please register at as space is limited.

‌Generous support for the exhibition has been provided by the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation. Venü Magazine is the exclusive media sponsor.
