Fairfield Celebrates National Nurses Week May 6 – 12
ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ and The Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies will celebrate May 6 – 12. The American Nurses Association established the week annually as a way of recognizing the important role nurses play in our national healthcare system.
“A nurses job is hard,” Meredith Wallace Kazer, dean of The Egan School, said and continued, “As the most trusted profession for the 14th year in a row, nurses spend more time with patients and families in the healthcare system than any other profession and our work requires a tremendous amount of time and dedication.”
Dean Kazer also explained that Nurses Week gives the community a chance to acknowledge and celebrate their hard work and dedication and brings awareness to the nursing profession.
In honor of Nurses Week 2016, ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ is co-sponsoring with the VA Hospital in West Haven, Conn., a lecture for all academic nursing leaders and faculty on Friday, May 6. Jacqueline A. Moss, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and assistant dean of clinical simulation and technology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will speak at the VA lunch on Veteran Competencies for Nursing.
According to Dr. Moss's recent article, military veterans represent 10 percent of the nation’s population, yet most veterans have specific health needs related to their military service. 
“Some seek care in VA facilities, but many do not and their health issues often go unrecognized,” Dean Kazer said about why veteran competencies for today’s nursing students and faculty are so essential.
Kathleen Lovanio, DNP, APRN-BC, RN-BC, instructor of the practice for The Egan School who helped coordinate the event, said the lecture and Nurses Week are important because nursing is a profession of on-going knowledge.
“Just to have Jackie available to discuss her research about veterans will help our faculty understand the importance,” Lovanio said. “We have to stop thinking ‘this is the way we did things,’ we have to stand up to the plate to become leaders as nurses to keep the healthcare system moving forward.”
