Class of 2020 Makes Fairfield History

Before setting foot on campus this fall, Fairfield鈥檚 Class of 2020 already made University history. Comprising the largest applicant pool on record with 11,055 applications, this year鈥檚 group of freshman also tied the Class of 2018 for the largest enrollment to date with 1,056 new Stags joining the herd.

鈥淥ne of the most exciting developments this year is that while we continue to bring down the admit rate (percentage of students offered admission), the yield (percentage of students accepting our admission offer) increased by almost two full points this year,鈥 explained Karen Pellegrino, Vice President for Enrollment Management.聽鈥淭hat combination of declining admit rate and increasing yield is a strong indicator of the appeal of Fairfield to prospective students.鈥

Although impressive, these statistics are not the only distinguishing factors that separate the Class of 2020 from its predecessors. According to the Office of Undergraduate Admission, this year's freshman class is composed of 408 males and 648 females that represent 23 states across the country. A slightly larger proportion of students are attending from outside the University鈥檚 core states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey, while 39 travelled to Fairfield from across the globe, nearly doubling last year鈥檚 international enrollment numbers. In addition to the class鈥 increased geographic representation, 37 students are graduates of Jesuit high schools, while 148 have a legacy connection to the University.

In terms of academics, the Class of 2020 represents the largest number of first-year nursing students with 152 freshmen currently enrolled in the Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies. The College of Arts and Sciences claims the largest enrollment with 455 students, while the Dolan School of Business is a close second with a just over 380 students. As a whole, the Class of 2020 boasted better standardized test scores and a higher overall GPA than last year鈥檚 class, and out of the thousand plus students enrolled, 96 received Magis Scholarships, the highest merit scholarship offered at Fairfield.

In addition to carrying on Fairfield鈥檚 tradition of excellence, it is clear that the Class of 2020 has already made their mark in the University鈥檚 history books, even if their college journey started just two short months ago. With records already being broken so early in the year, the Office of Admission is looking forward to the seeing the impact these students make on the campus community, both inside and outside of the classroom.
