Scripture Scholar to Deliver Commonweal Lecture, Sept. 22

On Thursday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m., prolific author Luke Timothy Johnson, PhD, Robert W. Woodruff professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, will deliver ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´â€™s Annual Commonweal lecture entitled "The Politics of the Christian Creed."

Free and open to the public, the event is sponsored by ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´'s Center for Catholic Studies, in partnership with Commonweal , a journal of opinion edited and managed by lay Catholics, which reviews religion, politics and culture. The lecture will be held in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room.

This lecture will explore how in Dr. Johnson’s own words, “The Creed that Christians recite together at worship is political in two important ways. First, the common commitment to a set of beliefs is itself a political act. Second, the contents of the creed represent a definite and — in many ways — counter-cultural politics."

Dr. Johnson is the author of 31 books and more than 300 scholarly articles, lectures and reviews. In 1996, his rebuttal of the Jesus Seminar, The Real Jesus: The Misguided Quest for the Historical Jesus and the Truth of the Traditional Gospels made national headlines. His most recent publication, The Revelatory Body: Theology as Inductive Art (2015, Eerdmans), explores the argument that theology can respond faithfully to the living God only by paying due attention to human bodily experience.
