Bennett Center for Judaic Studies Presents Blue Like Me: The Art of Siona Benjamin

On Wednesday, March 22, 天美传媒视频无限制观看鈥檚 Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies presents the Samuel and Bettie Roberts Lecture in Jewish Art by Siona Benjamin . Benjamin is an artist who was raised as Jewish in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim India. Her work reflects her background and heritage and is inspired by Indian miniature paintings and Sephardic icons.

鈥淢y work reflects my background and the transition between my old and new worlds,鈥 writes Benjamin. 鈥淗aving grown up in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim society, having been educated in Catholic and Zoroastrian schools, having been raised Jewish and now living in America, I have always had to reflect upon the cultural boundary zones in which I have lived. In this transcultural America, I feel a strong need to make art that will speak to my audience of our similarities, not our differences, as I feel I can contribute to a much-needed 鈥榬epair鈥 (Tikkun) through my art.鈥

Free and open to the public , the illustrated talk will take place at 7:30 p.m . in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room .

Benjamin was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, 2010-11, for a project entitled Faces: Weaving Indian Jewish Narratives . She won a second Fulbright Fellowship in 2016. Her art has been featured in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, Financial Times, Jewish Week , Boston Globe, Jerusalem Post, Times of Israel, Art in America, Art New England, Art and Antiques, ArtNews and Moment Magazine.

The event is sponsored by the Samuel and Bettie Roberts Memorial Endowment Fund. Reservations are recommended for the lecture. Please e-mail bennettcenter@fairfield.edu or call 203-254-4000, ext. 2066 .
