Three Stags Collect MAAC Weekly Awards

Three student-athletes have been recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this past week for their performances in winning efforts for the Stags. Gavin Wallace ’18 from Fairfield baseball, Riley Hellstein ’17 from women’s lacrosse and Sarah Stuhlmann ’18 from women’s tennis have received weekly honors.

Wallace was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season after throwing a complete game shutout in the Stags’ 1-0 win at Rider last Saturday afternoon. For the season, he leads Fairfield on the mound with a 4-1 record and a 1.76 earned run average. Wallace has thrown a nine-inning shutout in each of his last two appearances toeing the rubber for the Stags.

Hellstein totaled 14 points in two wins for Fairfield women’s lacrosse last week en route to MAAC Offensive Player of the Week laurels. She scored four goals with five assists in a 13-4 win over Sacred Heart last Wednesday and followed up with four more goals and an assist in Saturday’s 19-5 victory at Siena. Hellstein, who is Fairfield’s leading scorer this spring with 29 goals and 41 total points, continued her torrid scoring pace this week with two goals and five assists in a 12-4 win at Central Connecticut State. She also broke the program’s all-time record after collecting her 154th draw control in the triumph over the Blue Devils.

Stuhlmann is the MAAC Tennis Player of the Week after winning in straight sets at No. 1 singles and teaming with Nicole Aragones ’18 for a win in the No. 1 doubles spot in the Stags’ victory at Saint Peter’s. Most recently, Stuhlmann earned two more victories with wins in the top spot in both singles and doubles (with Aragones) on Wednesday at Wagner.
