With 90 Seconds on the Clock, Students Put Their Elevator Pitch Skills to the Test

Students gather for the annual Fairfield StartUp Elevator Pitch Workshop on October 14.

The second Fairfield StartUp event of the semester will take place on Saturday, October 14 where students will hear from alumni investor Michael Garvey ’89, and learn how to deliver a 90 second elevator pitch. Garvey, a StartUp Showcase investor and founder and managing director of License Monitor, Inc. which provides proactive license monitoring and risk management services, will introduce a new company he is currently developing that students will then practice pitching to a panel of alumni and faculty.

Chris Huntley, PhD,  associate professor and program director of Fairfield StartUp, will deliver a lesson on how to make an elevator pitch. Dr. Huntley shared, “Pitching is perhaps the most elemental of all the things an entrepreneur has to do. There are no props, no slides, no suits, no time to write a speech…just you and the person who you are trying to engage in 90 seconds or less.”

After Garvey shares his business plan students will pair off into teams and practice their pitch. A $500 prize will be awarded to three teams each and those students will be invited to pitch in front of a live audience at the annual StartUp Showcase in April for a chance to win $1,000.

The Elevator Pitch Workshop is an excellent opportunity for students to develop business ideas and network with fellow students. For students interested in pitching for a spot in the Showcase it is a valuable opportunity to meet other students to form teams and practice pitching ideas in front of a small audience.

The Elevator Pitch Workshop is open to all students and will take place on Saturday, October 14 at 10 a.m. in the Dolan School of Business room 110A. Students should register on OrgSync.
