The University's resident production company opens its 2017-18 season with a modern translation of Sophokles’ Greek tragedy.
Theatre Fairfield, ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´’s resident production company, will open its 2017-2018 season with four sold-out performances of Anne Carson’s modern translation of the famous Sophokles’ Greek tragedy, Antigone . The play will be performed in the Wien Experimental Theatre at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, Wednesday, Oct. 25 through Sunday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m., with 2p.m. matinees on Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29. Tickets are still available for both Saturday performances at 2p.m. and 8p.m.

Approaching the work with both a classical sensitivity and modern resonance, Dr. Anne Carson’s new feminist version of Antigone is an urgent response to 21 st century global politics that was commissioned by Belgian director Ivo von Hove for a 2015 international production, starring French actor Juliette Binoche. In the modern translation, Antigone defies her uncle King Kreon’s edict to leave her slain brother unburied after Kreon declares him a traitor to the state. Antigone boldly and unapologetically speaks truth to power, instigating a battle of unyielding wills with Kreon, in which she is ultimately condemned to death. After destroying his family, Kreon feels remorse for his actions, but it is too late. The play ends with the admonition of the Chorus: “You big men with your big words/pay a big price for that/but in the end/you learn wisdom too/even you.”
The cast of Theatre Fairfield’s production of Antigone stars Sean Larson ’18, Jessie Lizotte’18, Shannon Kelly ’19, Tim Healey ’20, Martha Hegley ’20, Emily Ramsey ’20, Fallon Sullivan ’20, Park Lytle ’21, and Maeve Moriarty ’21. The production is directed by Marti LoMonaco, PhD, professor of visual and performing arts, with movement direction by Brad Roth and vocal coaching by Monica Blaze Leavitt. Professor Lynne Porter, director of Fairfield’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts, is producing the play with Julie Leavitt designing costumes and Anne Kendall as the technical director.
