ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´’s MFA in creative writing program is hosting a book fair in celebration of the release of three recent alumni publications on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m. in the Aloysius P. Kelley Center presentation room. The special event is free and open to the public and will feature live readings and booking signings by the newly-published authors, in addition to other MFA students and alumni who will be signing and selling copies of their previously published books.
“We normally host a separate event for each alumni book launch, but with three new books in one semester, we decided that a celebration was in order,” explained Sonya Huber, associate English professor and director of the University’s MFA program. “Our aim is to help our alumni authors introduce their work to the world, and also to connect our undergraduate creative writers with successful and published authors.”
The book fair’s featured publications include Out of Granada by Fairfield mathematics professor Dr. Ben Fine ’13, a swashbuckling historical fiction novel about a Grenadian commander during the Inquisition of Madrid; Frozen Voices , the debut novel from Lynne Heinzmann ’14 that weaves a spellbinding tale about the passengers on the fateful Larchmont steamship that sank off the coast of Rhode Island in 1907; and Make Dust Our Paper , a novel written by Joseph Reynolds ’14 about a twenty-one year old craving culmination as he approaches the millennium New Year, but finds himself in a constant anti-climax with little-to-no fanfare or consequences for his failures.
“Many of these manuscripts started as ideas in our MFA workshops, and seeing a story, essay, or complete book through to publication is enormously gratifying, not only for the writer, but for everyone who has supported them along the way,” Huber said. “These publications, along with every one of our alumni at every stage of the writing process, represent the range of skills our graduates acquired in the program, and also the daily effort it takes to build a writing career."
Fairfield’s MFA program has had overwhelming success over the past few years. More than 45 students and alumni have already published original novels, in addition to hundreds of articles, essays, and poems. Students enrolled in the program are encouraged to pursue whichever genre they desire to study, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or screenwriting.
