Stags Soccer Trio Earns All-Region Honors

Botterill, Casielles and Vergin led Fairfield to a second straight MAAC regular season title.

After helping to guide Fairfield Men’s Soccer to its second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship in 2018, three Stags have been recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as All-East Region Second Team honorees. Goalkeeper Gordon Botterill ’21, midfielder Diego Casielles ’19 and back Jonas Vergin ’21 were all recognized for their contributions on the pitch this fall.

Botterill, who was also the MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year and a First Team All-MAAC selection, played over 1600 minutes in goal for the Stags this season. He owned a 1.03 goals-against average and a .765 save percentage, making five or more saves in seven outings and registering four shutouts.

Also a First All-MAAC performer, Casielles nabbed All-East laurels after leading the Stags with five goals and 11 total points. He netted three game-winning goals and also handed out an assist in his final collegiate campaign.

Vergin adds All-East recognition to a 2018 season that previously included MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-MAAC honors. He appeared on the backline in all 18 matches for the Stags, leading the defense to the third-best goals-against average in the MAAC, at 1.02.

Fairfield Men’s Soccer finished the 2018 season with a record of 11-5-2. The Stags went unbeaten in MAAC competition (8-0-2) to secure their fifth MAAC Regular Season Championship, all of which have been earned during the tenure of Head Coach Carl Rees. Rees was named the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2018 for the second straight season and the fourth time in his Fairfield career.
