ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ student Eunsun Hong ’19 was recently named a 2018 Newman Civic Fellow.
Hong is one of 268 students across the country who will be a part of the 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.
A global public health major and international studies and biochemistry minor, Hong participated in the Global Scholars program in The Gambia where she worked with the non-profit organization focusing on girls’ education, Starfish International. During her time in the program, she taught courses in health and nutrition for middle and high school girls.
After returning from the program, Hong continued to make a difference in the world. She co-founded the Global Health Club on campus, which will coordinate outreach between the University and local public health-related and educational facilities. The club will host global health discussions, offer volunteer opportunities at domestic and international organizations, and provide education to local elementary schools.
“I have always had a passion in advocating health issues while also having a deep appreciation for cultures all around,” stated Hong. “Within the broad field of global health, I am specifically interested in child and maternal health, how healthcare workers utilize and understand the cultures of a community to provide better care, and ultimately how to develop and improve healthcare systems in developing cultures.”
The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
