Dr. Nieto will deliver a keynote address entitled, 鈥淐ulturally Responsive Teaching: What Educators Need to Know鈥 followed by an audience Q&A with a panel of experts.
The Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions (GSEAP) invites local educators and the Fairfield community to attend an evening with Sonia Nieto, PhD, entitled, “Culturally Responsive Teaching: What Educators Need to Know” on Wednesday, March 28.
Author of 11 books, Dr.Nieto has received numerous awards for her scholarly work, activism, and advocacy, including eight honorary doctorates. Focusing on multicultural education, teacher education, and the education of students of linguistically diverse backgrounds, Dr. Nieto has been a teacher educator for over 30 years and has written extensively on equity in education.
“I could not be happier and more grateful to have Dr. Sonia Nieto, a multicultural education icon and scholar-activist, as our inaugural keynote speaker for the Diversity Workshop Series,” said Pierre Orelus, PhD, chair and associate professor of Educational Studies and Teacher Preparation.
During the evening, Dr. Nieto will discuss the respectful and effective manner in which teachers and administrators can responsibly engage students and parents of diverse backgrounds. Participants can expect to gain a sound understanding of culturally responsive teaching and pedagogy that builds on students’ diverse backgrounds and prior knowledge. Following Dr. Nieto’s keynote there will be an audience Q&A with a panel of experts.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Nieto’s teaching career includes working at P.S. 25 in the Bronx, the first bilingual school in the Northeast. She holds a doctorate in education with special concentrations in multicultural and bilingual education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dr. Nieto is professor emerita of language, literacy, and culture in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts.
