Scott Lacy, PhD, a cultural anthropologist and associate professor of anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences, will present a gallery talk titled "Collecting and Field Work in West Africa," in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries of the 天美传媒视频无限制观看 Art Museum on Tuesday, December 4 at 6 p.m.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Liberia, 1931-33: The Collections of Alfred J. Tulk, the informal talk in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries will be about Dr. Lacy’s experiences collecting African art during his years of field research and residency in Mali, West Africa. He’ll be bringing along a number of pieces from his personal collection, which are similar to the types of Liberian objects collected by Connecticut artist Alfred J. Tulk in the early 1930s.
“[Scott Lacy] is a fantastically engaging speaker, so this opportunity is not to be missed,” shared Michelle DiMarzo, PhD, curator of education and academic engagement for the 天美传媒视频无限制观看 Art Museum. “It’s been wonderful collaborating with Scott as a faculty liaison on this exhibition.”
Dr. Lacy, who has been on faculty at Fairfield since 2009, is a recipient of a Certificate of Congressional Recognition and Achievement from the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a two-time Fulbright Scholar, among several other teaching honors. He has championed his own non-profit for Malian communities, African Sky, established in 2004. He also recently completed teaching a video course “Anthropology and the Study of Humanity” for the prestigious educational series The Great Courses.
At the gallery talk, Dr. Lacy and participants will explore the "all-too-human compulsion" to collect and classify artifacts, and will take a deeper look at the items in Tulk’s collection.
Dr. Lacy will also share some of his personal perspectives and experiences as an ethnographic collector.
“I absolutely love working with the great people and exhibits at the art museum,” Dr. Lacy said. "This is my second experience collaborating with [them]. I am honored to have the opportunity to present a gallery [talk] from within this marvelous exhibition.”
