On Wednesday, November 14, ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ will celebrate the launch of the Peace Corps Prep Program, a specialized career step program to prepare students interested in pursuing Peace Corps volunteer work after graduation. The Program will be offered through a joint collaboration between the Peace Corps and the University’s International Studies Program and Center for Faith & Public Life.
ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ Associate Director of the International Studies Program and Co-Director of the Peace Corps Prep Program, Anita Deeg-Carlin, said, “After almost two years of preparation, we are pleased to launch Fairfield’s new Peace Corps Prep Program, the first of its kind among our Jesuit peer institutions. This dynamic program will allow us to address our students’ ardent interest in pursuing international careers by honing their intercultural skills and building their professional portfolios. With a Peace Corps Prep certificate, graduates will have a head start when applying to international service opportunities as well as a diverse community of peers who share their global outlook.”
The program will kick off with a lunch and learn panel from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Dogwood Room in the Barone Campus Center. Speakers at the event will include President Mark R. Nemec, PhD, Provost Christine Siegel, PhD, as well as Peace Corps regional recruiter, Michael Kunkel. Following announcements, lunch will be served during a panel discussion about international development work. Panelists will include Scott Lacy, PhD, Sylvia Marsans-Sakly, PhD, Michael Kunkel, Sunny Hong '19, and Ashley Toombs '11.
“The network of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´ Peace Corps Volunteers is large and supportive, and we encourage all of our students to learn more about how they might engage in a life-changing experience like this one,” said Deeg-Carlin about the importance of the program.
Just this month, Lesbia Orellana Recinos ’19, a Management major and Global Scholar, successfully completed all requirements of the Peace Corps Prep Program and will receive her official certificate. Recinos served as a Global Scholar in her native country in Guatemala this past summer and has plans to pursue global business development. She is interested in the opportunity to serve in the Peace Corps upon graduation.
“I want to have an impact on people’s lives and have a global career,” said Recinos. “I love interacting with people around the world and I also love to travel. Serving in the Peace Corps would be an opportunity for me to combine my interests while serving others.”
