Spend a day under the sea at the Quick: come early to experience the Maritime Aquarium’s Touch Tank before taking in the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia's enchanting new theatrical production of Marcus Pfister’s beloved children’s book.
After the success of previous seasons featuring The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny and Guess How Much I Love You and I Love My Little Storybook, the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia will return to the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Sunday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m. with their new piece, The Rainbow Fish. Juice and cookies will be served following the performance.
Marcus Pfister’s 1992 underwater tale of a fish who learns to share his shimmering silver scales is brought to life through Mermaid Theatre’s innovative “black light” puppetry, striking scenic effects, and evocative original music. The show tells Pfister’s original story as well two of his companion tales, Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea and Rainbow Fish: Opposites.
Originally published in German (Der Regenbogenfisch), in Switzerland – and both written and illustrated by Pfister – The Rainbow Fish tells a story that’s simply told but has complex moral dimensions. Rainbow Fish is considered the most beautiful fish in the sea because of scales that shimmer in all the colors of the rainbow. He is admired—and resented—by the entire underwater world, until a clever octopus advises him to give each fish one of his scales. Pfister has written a half-dozen sequels, and The Rainbow Fish spawned a television series that aired on HBO.
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia was founded in 1972 and ranks among North America’s most respected theatres for the young, having performed for more than 5.5 million spectators on four continents. The company plays an important ambassadorial role for Nova Scotia and for Canada, traveling as far as Japan, Mexico, Australia, England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Vietnam, South Korea and Taiwan, Bahrain, and the People’s Republic of China. Mermaid Theatre has earned Export Excellence awards from both the governments of Canada and of Nova Scotia.
