ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÊÓƵÎÞÏÞÖƹۿ´’s MFA in Creative Writing program is celebrating the recent release of five alumni literary publications with a special book reading and signing at the University’s downtown bookstore on Tuesday, September 25, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will be held on the second floor of the bookstore, located at 1499 Post Road in Fairfield.
“We normally host a separate event for each alumni book launch, but with five new books in one semester, we decided that a celebration was in order,” explained Sonya Huber, associate English professor and director of the University’s MFA program. “These publications represent the range of skills our graduates acquired throughout the program and are a testament to the daily effort it takes to build a writing career."
The event’s featured publications include The History of Jane Doe by Michael Belanger, MFA ’18, a poignantly funny coming of-age-story about first love, first loss, and the power of history to give life meaning; Synod, a historical work of fiction by Daniel Gunderman, MFA ’16, which follows a War of 1812 veteran as he struggles against corruption, deceit, and complacency for abolitionism; Night Snow, a collection of original poems by Sally Nacker, MFA ’13, centered around nature, small moments, and observation; The Selma Marches for Civil Rights: We Shall Overcome, a vivid example of storytelling by Steven Otfinoski, MFA ’11, that places readers in the shoes of ten people who experienced one of the most pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement; and The Astronaut’s Son, the debut novel by Tom Seigel, MFA ’16, about a Jewish astronaut forced to confront NASA's early collaboration with Nazis and the role it may have played in his father's death.
Throughout its decade-long run, Fairfield’s low-residency MFA program in Creative Writing has fostered a spirited alumni community comprised of experienced and emerging writers. More than 55 students and alumni have already published original novels, in addition to hundreds of articles, essays, and poems. Students enrolled in the program are encouraged to pursue whichever genre they desire to study, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or screenwriting.
