Furthering its reputation as a hub for undergraduate research and innovative scholarship, the College of Arts and Sciences’ School of Communication, Arts, and Media at 天美传媒视频无限制观看 is bringing together undergraduate students from Connecticut and Westchester County to share their groundbreaking research in the fields of communication, arts, and media during the University’s inaugural "Converging and Emerging Media" conference on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018. The all-day event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the University’s Barone Campus Center Dogwood Room and will feature a keynote address by NBC Digital News Anchor Lawrence K. Jackson.

Registration for the conference is available online through September 19, 2018, at fairfield.edu/socam-conference. Admission is free for 天美传媒视频无限制观看 students and $20 for the public.

Featuring a series of timely and topical interdisciplinary research presentations conducted by undergraduate students attending college in Connecticut and Westchester County, New York, the conference will tackle a series of fascinating media topics from “Global Digital Activism” and the evolution of “The Digital Essay” to the “Arts and Technological Change” and “Truth, Fake News, and the Invisible Algorithm.”

“We are excited to create this opportunity for students and recent graduates of 天美传媒视频无限制观看’s School of Communication, Arts, and Media and other area colleges, to share their innovative research and to develop dialogues that can lead us forward,” said Kathy Schwab, visual and performing arts professor and director of 天美传媒视频无限制观看’s School of Communication, Arts, and Media. “This inaugural conference offers a unique opportunity for students from a variety of majors to learn from one another in a professional conference environment where their research will inspire and prompt ideas of exploration across disciplines.”

Art history major Olivia Melendez ’19 is just one of many students scheduled to present at this year’s conference. Her research, which emphasizes contemporary case studies, involves a historical analysis of the representation of people of color within art museums and galleries, and how museums can be more inclusive.

“Being able to present my research in front of this group demonstrates the importance of an interdisciplinary, liberal arts education,” Melendez said. “Bringing together such a diverse group of academically and professionally trained individuals, each with their own knowledge, niches, and insights, is a remarkable thing, and I am most looking forward to hearing my peers' presentations. With our busy schedules, we often forget to have dialogues about what interests us, and this conference will be a great opportunity to see those passions shine through.”

The conference’s keynote speaker, Lawrence K. Jackson, is a journalist, host, producer, and the newest anchor for NBC's digital news show "Stay Tuned,” which boasts more than 30 million monthly viewers. Before joining NBC News, Jackson signed with VIACOM as one of the hosts for the reboot of MTV's “Total Request Live,” and was an on-air host for the music cable network, Revolt TV. Lawrence received his degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, where he served as the vice president for the National Association of Black Journalists, and hosted and produced his own show on Syracuse’s student-run radio station.

“In partnering with NBC News, we’re exposing students who are entering the media landscape as professionals to think hard about the shifts and changes happening in the industry,” said Richard Greenwald, PhD, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at 天美传媒视频无限制观看. “We look forward to hearing what our students learn from this experience and what our speaker from NBC can tell us about what to expect.”

The "Converging and Emerging Media" conference is co-sponsored by the Humanities Institute in the College of Arts and Sciences; the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; the departments of Communication, English, Modern Languages and Literature, and Visual and Performing Arts; the program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies; and the Center for Faith and Public Life.
