Political Theorist Cristina Beltrán Announced as Keynote Speaker for Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation

Cristina Beltrán, PhD, associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, will be the keynote speaker at 天美传媒视频无限制观看's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Monday, February 22.

天美传媒视频无限制观看 will welcome award-winning political theorist and New York University Associate Professor Cristina Beltrán, PhD for the virtual 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Monday, February 22 at 7 p.m. 

The convocation is free and open to the public. The theme for 天美传媒视频无限制观看’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. observance is “Striving to Build the Beloved Community: From Dr. King to Black Lives Matter.” A week of virtual programming to celebrate the life and influence of the late Dr. King will be held in February.

Dr. Beltrán is an associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Social & Cultural Analysis at New York University. A political theorist by training, her research and interests focus on modern and contemporary political theory, democratic theory, Latino Studies/Latino politics in the U.S., feminist theory, American political thought, race and ethnicity, and gender and sexuality. She is author of The Trouble with Unity: Latino Politics and the Creation of Identity (Oxford University Press, 2010), which received numerous awards, including the American Political Science Association’s Ralph Bunche Award and the Casa de la Américas prize for the best book on Latinos in the United States. Her new book, Cruelty as Citizenship: How Migrant Suffering Sustains White Democracy has just been published with the Forerunner Series at the University of Minnesota Press.

Her research has also appeared in the journals Political Theory, Aztlán, Politics & Gender, Contemporary Political Theory, Political Research Quarterly, and the Du Bois Review as well as various edited volumes. Along with Elisabeth Anker, she is co-editor of the journal Theory & Event. She also provides political commentary on MSNBC and has appeared on The Beat with Ari Melber, Velshi with Ali Velshi, All In with Chris Hayes, and The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell.
