For the first time since Enrico Caruso starred in the opera in 1916, the Met will present Bizet鈥檚 lush, lyrical and melodic romance in a production by Woolcock, who made her Met debut when staging John Adams鈥檚
Doctor Atomic
. The opera takes place in an exotic Far East land with a mythical and romantic aura, and explores the timeless themes of pure love, betrayal and vengeance in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on the stage of the Met.
Gianandrea Noseda conducts a cast led by Diana Damrau as the beautiful priestess Le茂la. Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien sing the roles of Nadir and Zurga, the two pearl fishers whose friendship is tested by their rivalry for Le茂la鈥檚 affections; their 鈥淎u fond du temple saint鈥 is one of the best-known duets in opera. Nicolas Test茅 sings the high priest Nourabad in the new production. This opera is not performed frequently and thus is not one to miss.
