Founded in 1970 by Tina Ramirez, who was recognized for her achievements with the National Medal of Arts, Ballet Hispanico began as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe. The organization has grown into a world-class institution with a New York City headquarters and state-of-the-art dance studios for its programs and the arts community.
In August 2009, Ballet Hispanico welcomed Eduardo Vilaro as its artistic director. A former member of the Ballet Hispanico Company, Vilaro founded and led Chicago鈥檚 Luna Negra Dance Theater for a decade. Vilaro鈥檚 background in dance education and community outreach allows him to build on the company鈥檚 founding values and lead Ballet Hispanico into an artistically vibrant future.
Dance critics the world over rave over the company鈥檚 theatricality, athleticism and passion. The Washington Post described them as 鈥渢he most technically accomplished and musical dancers you鈥檒l find in the contemporary sphere.鈥
At the Quick Center, the company will perform four works, including 鈥淎suka,鈥 a celebration of the music of Celia Cruz, and 鈥淓l Beso,鈥 a spirited look at the nuances of a kiss set to Spanish Zarzuela music.
