Often cited as Italian opera鈥檚 greatest tragedy, Otello almost did not see the light of day, as Verdi, at the time of its composition, considered himself as having retired from the opera. However, he was convinced to undertake the work after meeting with librettist, Arrigo Boito.
A new staging of Verdi鈥檚 masterpiece, Otello will be conducted by Yannick N茅zet-S茅guin and directed by Bartlett Sher. Aleksandrs Antonenko makes his Met debut as the tormented Moor of Venice, with Sonya Yoncheva as Desdemona, and 沤eljko Lu膷i膰 as Otello鈥檚 sinister rival, Iago. The staging also features Dimitri Pittas as Cassio and G眉nther Groissb枚ck as Lodovico.
