The Stags and Griffs sit atop the MAAC standings.
Winning 21 of its last 25 games, Fairfield Baseball has climbed to second place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. This weekend, the Stags (25-15, 11-4 MAAC) host the team ahead of them on the ledger when Canisius (19-19, 12-3 MAAC) comes to Alumni Diamond for a three-game series.
The Stags and Golden Griffins will play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday, April 27. The series finale will be on Sunday, April 28 with first pitch slated for noon. Under the direction of Head Coach Bill Currier, the Stags have been led offensively by Jack Gethings ’19 with a conference-leading .409 batting average, which is currently good for 12th in the nation. The senior shortstop, who also leads the MAAC with six triples this spring, enters the weekend 13 hits shy of tying Tucker Nathan’s program-record 263 career hits.
In the heart of the order, Anthony Boselli ’19 is hitting .327 with a team-leading 38 runs batted in, and Tim Zeng ’19 has set the table from the leadoff spot with a .301 average and a team-best 41 runs scored.
On the mound, Fairfield leads the MAAC in earned run average (3.52), batting average against (.239), WHIP (1.29), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.06). Individually, Austin Pope ’20 leads all MAAC starting pitchers with a 2.19 earned run average and ranks second with a team-best .186 batting average against. Trey McLoughlin ’21 and Eli Oliphant ’20 have each earned a team-best four wins on the bump. Closing the door at the tail end of a strong bullpen is Nick Grabek ’21, who has compiled a MAAC-high eight saves.
After this weekend’s three-game set against Canisius, the Stags will visit Niagara before closing out the MAAC regular season at home with three games against Quinnipiac, May 11-12.
In addition to 11 MAAC wins, Fairfield’s 25 wins to date include victories over St. John’s, Hofstra, Yale, Stony Brook, James Madison and #22 nationally-ranked UConn.
